Automotive Keys

Mechanical Keys
These are the most traditional types, featuring only metal cuts designed to physically turn the ignition cylinder and door locks. While still common in older models, they lack integrated security features and can be easily duplicated by any locksmith or hardware store.

Remote Keys and Remotes
The first step in convenience technology added simple radio transmitters to a key head or as a separate fob ("remote"). These remotes operate the power locks and trunk release from a distance, but the mechanical blade is still required to start the engine.

Transponder Keys (Chip Keys)
A massive leap in security came with transponder keys, introduced widely in the 1990s. These keys contain a small electronic chip (transponder) embedded in the plastic head.
